When to use edge computing instead of servers

Server-based computing and edge computing are two different approaches to computing. Server-based computing is a traditional approach where all processing and storage of data is centralised on a server. Edge computing is a newer approach where the processing and storage of data is done at the edge of the network, closer to the end-user.

Edge computing and traditional server-based computing serve different purposes and are not necessarily direct alternatives to each other. Instead, they can complement each other in various scenarios to enhance overall system efficiency and performance.

Decentralising in Industrial IOT is becoming increasingly popular as the amount of data generated by devices at the edge of the network continues to grow. Edge computing can help to improve performance and reduce latency for users at the edge of the network, and it can also help to improve security.

Edge Computing is a decentralised computing model where data processing and analysis take place closer to the source of data, such as IoT devices, sensors, or local networks. The primary goal of edge computing is to reduce latency, bandwidth usage, and reliance on centralised data centres or cloud servers. It is particularly useful in applications that require real-time processing, low latency, and high levels of security and privacy.

So, which one is right for you? It depends on your specific needs. Here are some factors to consider when making your decision:

  • Performance: If you need high performance for applications that require real-time processing, then edge computing may be a better choice. This is because edge computing can reduce the distance that data has to travel to be processed, which can improve performance.
  • Latency: If you need low latency for applications that require quick response times, then edge computing may also be a better choice.
  • Security: If you need to improve security for your applications, then edge computing may be a better choice. Data is processed closer to the source, which can make it more difficult for attackers to access data.
  • Cost: Edge computing can be less expensive than server-based computing for some applications, as it requires less hardware and infrastructure. However, it can also be more expensive for other applications.
  • Reliability: If there are business or process critical elements to the system a high availability or fault tolerant edge compute solution can be deployed at significantly lower cost than a centralised server of similar capability.
  • Derisking a project: many of the operating systems, VM capability, licensing and setup capabilities are built in so the  skills, time, and cost of deployment are significantly reduced.
  • Increased scalability: Edge computing can be more scalable than server-based computing, as it can be easily added to or removed as needed.

Ultimately, the best way to choose between server-based computing and edge computing is to consider your specific needs and requirements. If you are not sure which approach is right for you, then speak to a technical expert at Routeco.
